Korean ETRI to Join Futuremark Handheld BDP and License 3DMarkMobile ES 2.0
ETRI adopts 3DMarkMobile ES 2.0 to establish OpenGL ES 2.0 performance standards within Korean telecommunications equipment.
Espoo, Finland July 3, 2007 Futuremark Corporation, the worlds leading provider of handheld and mobile performance analysis software and services, including OpenGL ES 1.1 and 2.0, OpenVG 1.0 and Java M3G tools, announced today that the Korean government funded Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has enrolled in Futuremarks Handheld Benchmark Development Program (BDP) and has formally licensed 3DMarkMobile ES 2.0. This move will provide the Korean telecommunications equipment research group with tools that will be used to establish OpenGL ES 2.0 3D performance standards for Korean mobile gaming industry and all future handheld products to be sold in the Korean marketplace.
ETRI is a Korean government funded non-profit research organization with a 25 year history of being at the forefront of advanced and emerging technologies in the telecommunications industry. ETRIs research institute has successfully developed information technologies such as TDX-Exchange, High Density Semiconductor Microchips, Mini-Super Computer (TiCOM), and Digital Mobile Telecommunication System (CDMA).
ETRI actively supports the Korean mobile gaming industry by finding and showcasing capabilities of next generation mobile gaming technologies such as OpenGL ES. The organization has a mission of researching emerging technologies and delivering their findings to promote growth within the telecommunications industry. Utilizing Futuremarks benchmarks and BDP membership, ETRI will create a fundamental competency enabling them to define hardware requirements for optimal performance of gaming technologies on mobile devices.
"Futuremark is currently the only provider of next generation test workloads and 3D content for OpenGL ES 2.0 performance evaluation. In addition to their tools, our Handheld BDP membership allies us with the worlds leading handheld industry players," said Seong Mo Park, Team Leader/Ph.D from ETRIs IT SoC Research Division This provides us (ETRI) access to trusted resources, permitting our organization to research the latest mobile 3D technologies and publish the right findings and recommendations for the fast growing Korean mobile gaming industry".
Futuremark Corporation has a mission to further the development and performance of 2D and 3D graphics technologies in mobile devices, ultimately providing consumers with better performing rich-media capable mobile devices. Their relationship with ETRI endorses this mission, while validating their array of handheld benchmarking tools including 3DMarkMobile ES 1.1, 3DMarkMobile ES 2.0, SimulationMark, VGMark 1.0, SPMarkJava JSR 184 and SPMark for Symbian OS9.
"We are very happy to help both ETRI and the Korean mobile gaming industry understand the capabilities, requirements and value of mobile gamings future. ETRI goals of enabling growth in the mobile industry by exposing the gaming community and the industry to new technologies are identical to our own, said Petri Talala, Vice President of Futuremarks Mobile Business Unit. Futuremark's Handheld BDP and state-of-art benchmarking workloads based on OpenGL ES 2.0 in 3DMarkMobile ES 2.0 will show today the leading edge of tomorrows mobile gaming capabilities."
